Ingredients:
- 1 pound (about 4 cups) of salted crackers (such as saltines)
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped nuts (optional – pecans or walnuts work well)
- Festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes (optional for decoration)
Instructions:
- Prepare the crockpot: Line the inside of your slow cooker with a liner or parchment paper. Alternatively, grease the crockpot’s interior to prevent sticking.
- Layer the crackers: Arrange the salted crackers in a single layer at the bottom of the crockpot, covering as much space as possible.
- Prepare the toffee mixture: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly until it reaches a smooth consistency and starts bubbling. Let it bubble for about 2-3 minutes without stirring.
- Pour over the crackers: Carefully pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the layer of crackers in the crockpot, making sure to cover them entirely.
- Cook in the crockpot: Set the crockpot to low heat and cover it. Cook for about 1 to 2 hours, checking occasionally to ensure the edges don’t burn. The toffee should bubble and spread over the crackers.
- Add chocolate and nuts: Once the toffee layer is set and bubbly, sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee. Let them sit for a few minutes to soften, then use a spatula or spoon to spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee layer. If using nuts, sprinkle them over the chocolate.
- Set and decorate: Add festive sprinkles or crushed candy canes over the chocolate layer for a decorative touch, if desired.
- Chill and break into pieces: Allow the Christmas Crack to cool and set completely, either at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Once firm, break it into pieces and enjoy!
This sweet and salty treat is perfect for sharing during the holiday season. The crockpot method makes it easy to prepare, allowing you to focus on other festivities while it cooks!
