Ingredients:
- 1 package (about 17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry sheets, thawed (usually comes with 2 sheets)
- Granulated sugar for sprinkling (optional)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
- Whipped cream or pastry cream for filling (homemade or store-bought)
Equipment:
- Cream horn molds or metal cone molds
- Pastry brush
Instructions:
- Preheat oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
- Prepare the molds: If using metal cone molds, lightly grease them to prevent sticking. Alternatively, use non-stick cream horn molds.
- Prepare the pastry: On a lightly floured surface, unfold one sheet of puff pastry. Roll it slightly to smooth out any creases and to make it a bit thinner.
- Cut the pastry: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry sheet into strips, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide, depending on the size of your molds and how large you want the horns to be.
- Wrap the pastry around the molds: Starting at the pointed end of the mold, wrap one pastry strip around the mold in a spiral, slightly overlapping the layers. Ensure the pastry covers the entire mold. Brush the end of the pastry strip lightly with beaten egg and press it to secure the end.
- Place on baking sheet: Place the wrapped molds seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet. Repeat the process with the remaining strips and pastry sheet until all molds are covered.
- Egg wash and sprinkle (optional): Lightly brush the tops of the pastry horns with the beaten egg. If desired, sprinkle them with granulated sugar for a slightly sweet and crispy exterior.
- Bake: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for about 15-18 minutes or until the pastry horns are golden brown and puffed up.
- Cool and fill: Once baked, remove the pastry horns from the molds carefully and allow them to cool completely on a wire rack. Once cooled, fill the pastry horns with whipped cream or pastry cream using a piping bag fitted with a small tip or a spoon.
These puff pastry horns are delightful when filled with sweetened cream and can be dusted with powdered sugar or garnished with fruits for an added touch of elegance. Enjoy your homemade pastry delights!
